Did not file 2005 or 2006 taxes what do I do?
My boyfriend has not filed his 2005 or 2006 taxes and has now received a letter saying that his 2005 taxes have been filed and owes a good chunk of money. Is there anything he can do? He works in film and is usually able to write-off a good amount of stuff without receipts. What should he do? What if he has no receipts?

Get the tax booklets and forms for 2005 and 2006 from IRS and have your boyfriend fill out accordingly (If he normally fills out and files himself that is). The IRS likes to assume you are at the same job making the same money and owing the same as previous years unless you file otherwise. This happened to me a long time ago. Once I filled out the tax forms myself, I called the IRS and informed them of "their" mistake and that I was filing my taxes for those years late. P.S. I got a swell refund back for the years I didn't file and did not owe any penalties.

If the BF normally gets back a refund the same thing will happen to him. He can also go to any tax preparer as well. They will more than likely have the 2005 and 2006 forms there. Be sure he brings all tax info receipts, etc with him to properly file.

If he used credit cards, he can get and use the credit card statements.

    jjbladez:
Your boyfriend is an independent contractor. He must file tax return if his self employed income is $400 or more. Also his self employed income is subject to SE tax at 15.3%. Since he did not file his tax return, he undoubted owe SE taxes and may be income taxes. He will also pay interest and penalty.

    To your bf:
Do not ignore the IRS letter and be very careful about the due dates. If you miss the due dates, it implies that you agree to IRS's tax statement. IRS must have figured out your taxes on the basis of 1099s and with no business related expenses.

He will have to complete the tax returns for 2005 and 2006. Use whatever information he has to reconstruct the accounts. He can also use 2007 basis for reporting expenses for 2005 and 2006.
