    Electronic repair business?
Here is the situation I am in. I am 22 years old and I don't have a lot of money and a friend of my dad wants to hand his business over to me. The business is repairing electronics; TVs, VCRs, Stereos, etc. I would pretty much just take it over, but I honestly do not have much knowledge as far as running a business goes but I would love to take it over and keep it going. I do have experience repairing electronics and my dad has owned a similar business but he can't do much to help me because he has been having health problems. Eventually if I get the business I would like to start selling different brands of electronics and also get into computer repair. Is there anyone out there that could possibly give me any suggestions on what I would need to do or where I could go to find information?
    Thanks!

See if the guy will work with you for six months to a year so that you can learn from him...

In the meantime, take courses and try to get as much training as possible.

I think it is a pretty tough business because many of those types of items are simply thrown out rather than repaired if something goes wrong.

Some of the big computer stores offer classes for building computers that might be helpful in doing repairs as well.

    Hello l:

Good for you. But, you better learn some basic business skills first. I don't care how good you are at repairing things, if you can't collect your money, or you can't get customers, so what?

I went into the restaurant business because I was a good cook. But, I found myself being a salesman instead. I went into the security business because I knew about electronics. But, I found myself being a salesman instead. I went into to limo business because I knew how to drive. But, I found myself being a salesman instead.

Does any of that make sense to you?

Thank you for the reply and I completely understand what your saying. My dad has told me a lot about what he had to do to run a similar business. But that was a lot of years ago and he doesn't know what changed. What I am trying to find out is where I could go or what I would need to do. If any suggestions please let me know.

Thank you for your reply, and I wanted to do exactly that but he took on another project and no longer has the time. I just need any suggestions of classes or something I could take or what I need to do to learn what I am in for.

    Hello again, lytl:

Hire a CPA. He'll get your books and your accounts started on the right foot. He'll know what licenses you need. He'll know what form your business needs to be in. He may even be able to help you with marketing. He's a pretty important part of your business start up.
