Do speed cameras get you from behind?
Hello,
I was driving and I was going about 63 at the if that and this light shined above me in front of me for about 3 seconds and then it stopped and didn't go through any red light. I was told that speed cameras only get you from behind, is this true or utter bull?

So why are you worried about a speed camera?

There are many types of cameras and set ups. But all they need is from behind to show the license plate. The registered owner will be fined.
If someone other than the registered owner was driving, then they will have to tell the court who was driving.

The reason why I'm worries is because it flashed for three seconds but I don't know if it was for me or maybe someone when through a red light or I don't know

If you were doing only 3 mph over the limit, you have no worries.
Was this at a traffic light?

I asked because in the Chicago area, a white light up by the stop-and-go light will flash several times due to a remote controller in an emergency vehicle coming through. The remote in an ambulance, firetruck, police car can control the traffic lights so the light will be green when it goes through.
That might have been what you saw.

Now, your idea of running a red light the legal meaning of it, may be two different things,
If it was yellow when you entered the intersection, and turned red while you were in the middle of it, yes that is normally considered "running" the light. You are not suppoe to enter unless you can clear it before it turns red. Yellow does not mean floor it and get though ( OK, I do it, you do it we all do it) but yellow means prepare to stop and it allows people already in, to clear out.
But no one knows, if you get a ticket in a couple weeks it was you,

Hello chuck:
I never heard of a speed camera. How is taking a picture going to prove how fast you were going?

They are looking into them (cameras, not aliens - !) in my area and the ones I saw on TV showed the front and side of the vehicle, including a photo of the driver. There are probably different models. If the camera indicates you were speeding, then you get a ticket in the mail.
I don't know how this holds up in Court but apparently it has in other areas.
The "run a red light" cameras (which have already been installed) just show the license plate.

I'm assuming this just happened. Bottomline is you just have to wait until you get a summons to see if you were caught. Generally, if you haven't recevied anything in a month, you should be OK.

Hello Judy:
In my view, a picture doesn't and can't show speed. Therefore, it's no more reliable than a cop’s radar gun, and those can be challenged on technical and maintenance grounds. I'd love the opportunity to challenge it in court. At the rate they're being installed, I'll probably get my chance.
Where all this crap started was in Scottsdale, Az, and it was a red light camera. It took two pictures - one from the front showing the car IN the intersection, AND the drivers FACE. The other took a picture from behind showing the license no.
There were only three in the beginning and I knew where they all were. I would put on a bozo mask and blow right through them. When I got to court, I told them I didn't know who the bozo was driving my car. They tried to make me tell them, but I wouldn't.

I don't know about speed cameras, but I can see a camera activated by a radar gun.
