    Sheetrock around a gas fireplace
When framing around a fireplace a 1/2" space is needed all the way around the fireplace. At the top of the fireplace the gap is about 2" because the Quadrafire fireplace has some fins at the top (fins to the framing is 1/2", but firebox to framing is 2"). When I sheetrock around the fireplace, do I just let the sheetrock hang over the framing at the top so it has only a 1/2" gap?

    Thanks,

    Gregg

What does the metal trim that comes with the fireplace look like? Chances are it will more than cover the 2" gap at the top, so having the drywall overlap by 1 1/2 inches is not necessary. In fact, it sounds like it might be impossible to fit the fins under the drywall when you push the fireplace into the rough opening for final installation.

The fireplace installation directions should have your answer and be more specific about the rough opening required.

The fins are set back a bit on top the fireplace, so I can bring the sheetrock down within a 1/2" without a problem. I believe the sheetrock needs to be a minimum of a 1/2" away from the gas fireplace; does that sound correct? I believe the rock I'm going to place over the top of the sheetrock will actually touch the fireplace; does that sound correct?

I agree the manual is not that clear. However Figures 3.4 and 3.2 seem to indicate that the drywall is not overlapped by the 1.5inches

    I have two suggestions:
    1) Have you picked up the insert yet? If so, you can assemble the trim onto it and measure to see if the trim hides the gap at the top
    2) You can leave the drywall overlapped for now by the 1.5"... it's easy to trim it off later if it turns out that was wrong.
