In a community property state, if I had $10,000.00 in debt prior to the marriage, but that debt and all other debts were paid off during the marriage, can my soon to be ex-wife ask for that money. I was in a mentally and sometimes physically abusive relationship, and it was painful for me to make the decision to leave. We make about the same income, and she is threatening me with this even though she received like 5 times that amount of money in our relationship for her wardrobe, car, and other misc. expenses. I am a good guy that still cares for her, but had to leave because of the abuse. She even assaulted me with a weapon (knife) about 5 months ago. I did not file a police report, because I did not want to ruin her life or career. I am extremely saddened at my loss, but also concerned about my future financial situation.

I am not certain what effect the payment of debts has in relationship to ownership of property in a community property state. Don't listen to this woman if she is assaulting you; get a competent lawyer to explain your rights. The court will be fair to you even if she will not.
