    GE Water Dispenser Freezes
The water dispenser in the of my GE side by side often freezes. I can open the door for about thirty minutes to get it working but it will refreeze in a day or two. I see that I am not the only owner of a ge fridge that has this problem. I wanted to ask to see if anyone one had fix for this.

    Thanks JWTate

You are not the only person to experience this issue so get on the GE Hotline. Some units have been recalled while others not. They can sell you, or give you in a recall, a small heater element that will solve the problem.

There was a long discussion thread on this site about the water dispenser working intermittently, that seems to be "closed" now about this. I wonder if it's because someone has already started another class action lawsuit? I would love to sign on to that!

It is definitely a freezing problem. I took out my ice tray and put a towel in there for insulation. Within minutes I had flowing water again. According to the closed discussion thread on this site, some people were able to call GE and receive the part for free (albeit with some resistance.) Some people even received a whole new door for free! When I called them, they gave me the same resistance, saying I didn't have the right model number, saying that the warranty had expired, first trying to charge me $75 and then their final offer was $28 for the part. I decided they are not getting one more dollar of my money and I just ordered it from Amazon for $26. Almost everyone that has installed this part seems happy with it as a solution. It is part WR49X10173.

I will never buy GE again and I plan on spreading the word.

Remove door and lie it flat in a warm, dry place. Then remove all screws around edges of door and remove inside liner. You will need GE Silicone to put it back together. Look for an air leak. You can spot this as ice in the insulation. What you want to do is to either fix air leak by drying door in sun and resealing with GE Silicone and/or put in new tubing rerouted close to outside part of door as far from the freezer as you can get it. Carefully cut into foam insulation with butter knife so as not to cut anything and put in new tubing then seal with can of foam insulation. Clean around edges of door and seal with silicone. Check all seals. That should fix it.

GE has had several class action lawsuits because of the doors. In one they did not use GE Silicone to seal their doors and the doors had air leaks. I picked up quite a few of these refrigerators where all I had to do was to take apart the door and seal it with silicone.
