Leaking around the Shower drain?
I need help from anyone with some plumbing experience. I removed some ceiling tiles that were water logged and wet. The p-trap section that was visible in the tiles was a little wet. I removed these tiles along with the drywall that was above them to access the p-trap and cast iron pipe. Once visible I noticed that the leak is occurring around where my shower drain is above in my bathroom. Does anybody know what's an easy way (if there is one) to replace that section? It looks like it is reducing from 3" where the drain is to 2" to connect to the p-train section. Any help would be appreciated.
I initially thought that it was a straight section of the cast iron pipe, but that doesn't appear to be wet, the leak/dripping is occurring by where the drain section is... or so I think. |

HI bjw0025... nice to see you again. Hey, sounds like the shower strainer may need to be replaced. Here, the strainer may look like 3" reducing to 2" but I bet it is just the strainer itself that looks large... still piped 2"... pretty much all showers are (except some custom ones).
Is the pipe cast iron into the strainer.. In other words, is this a leaded strainer assembly... look under strainer cover upstairs and see if under the crud you see cast iron pipe and lead around edge of pipe. Get back to me... |

Massplumber2008 I really have to say that you have been a big help to me as I try and find the root of the problem. I will look when I get home tonight, and hope to have some more information. If it the shower strainer, should I replace with PVc, and can I find them at the big box stores? Also A little water has started dripping from the p-trap plug, should I repace that as well? Thanks again

See.. that is what I am thinking... may need to replace the p-trap and strainer assembly.. and yes.. transitioning over to PVC will be best for sure!. get back to me tomorrow.. I will not be able to answer until nighttime but I will answer back (or I am sure others can help, too! )
AND yes... home improvement stores should have all the parts needed! Talk soon. |
