How to file tax for OPT+H1B status+dependents
    Hi all,

After searching on web, I found that this is the best website to get help for tax. Although I read some responses, I could not stop myself to ask specific question regarding my condition.

I was on F1 status from Jan06 to May07, on OPT from May07 to Oct07, and on H1B from Oct07 to till date. I am confused:confused: about filing tax return bcoz I was on OPT and H1B in the same year. My company has never deducted SS tax or Medical tax from my pay check. I have dependents. How should I get maximum return? Is there any software available for filing tax on OPT and H1B. I had used CINTX when I was in school.

Please help. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best Wishes,
    Hritik.

    Hritik:

Assuming you are married, your best option is to file JOINTLY with your spouse and you BOTH choose to be treated as resident aliens for all of 2007. That allows you to claim the exemptions of all dependents, plus the $1,000 Child Tax Credit for the children, PLUS a $10,700 standard deduction.

    Thanks Expert.

I have one little questions: Don't I need more than some days (around 159) to be eligible to file as resident alian. Also, I just got our stamping done (my h1 andand my wife and kids's h4) in Nov 2007. We entered in US in Nov2007 on H1.

Do I need any documents for Child tax credit?

Also, what are your charges for preparing tax returns?

    Thanks in advance,
    Hritik

Email me at the address below or PM me for the charges.

You are correct; you will need to wait until June 2008 to file. I sometimes forget to add that detail, especially when I answer questions late at night.

No additional documents are needed for the Child Tax Credit.
