Hi, I have an oil painting with a signature I can't read. I don't know how to add a picture. It would be great if someone knew who this artist is.
Any help with a source to search signatures ( free ) or help with how to atach a photo would be appreciated, Thanks, Diane

Below, are some detailed instructions as to how to post images on this site as posted on the following thread by one of our wise members, jrebel7 on the following thread https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/collec...am-176199.html

If you could post an image, we might be able to discern the signature on it by altering it in various ways. Once you have learned how to post images here, it would be helpful if you could post one of the whole painting and also one that is a close-up of the signature area.

If, after reading the instructions below, you are still having trouble posting images here, then perhaps jrebel7 and you could arrange to be online here at the same time sometime so that she could walk you through the process.

Hi there! Clough requested I help with explaining how to resize image and post.

Since you have posted already, I am assuming you know where the file is located on your computer so just go to the image and left click on image once (this chooses it, does not open it) then right click on it. Run your cursor over OPEN WITH, it should show you several choices... if you see Microsoft Photo Editor, left click to open. Your image will show up in that program on your screen. At the top of that screen, you will see File, Edit, View, Image, etc. Left click on IMAGE, it should have a drop down box giving options, left click on "RESIZE" There will be a box that appears that shows the size of your image. On the right side it will show UNITS... on the drop down box you can choose inches or pixels, choose pixels. On this site, when you GO ADVANCED, that is where you can add the image and to do so, the image cannot be larger than 750 pixels. On mine, whatever is largest, height or width, I change it to 400 and the smaller measure changes automatically. Since Clough is needing to view image much larger, just make the pixels 750 or 600, whichever you choose, for the height or width, which ever is the largest. If you choose 750 for the smaller, it will be too large to post. Hope I have not confused you. :)

Once you have done this, PLEASE go to File and choose "SAVE AS"... you can name that image the same as original but add the word at the end as resized. That way you retain the smaller image but also have one you can post. If you want the image to be fairly large, you can go with the 750 pixels, I have used 600 but generally choose 400. That is just personal preference. If I have not left out a step in the instructions, this should allow you to resize your image to allow you to post using "Go Advanced" on the "Answer this Question" box in which I am typing. I will apologize ahead for mistakes I might have made as I have typed. If this does not work for you or you do not have Microsoft Photo Editor, just choose one of the other choices and see if under IMAGE at the top on the drop down box, it gives the option to resize.

I will be around my computer off and all most of the evening. I will check in from time to time. Best to you! Looks like interesting images. I will be anxious to see them enlarged also. :p

Thanks for the help, I hope this works. This is a large oil painting and is nicely framed. My husband found it at a thrift store. It's about 3ft by 5 ft.

The signature looks like "Helmat" to me. I searched Google for an artist by that name with several spellings but to no avail. There are studios that produce large volumes of "Sofa Paintings", originals but not by famous or well-known artists. Of course there are a plethora of artists who are amazingly talented that never get marketed.

You did a great job posting the image. :) I will continue to seek information for you regarding this signature. Just wanted you to know there are people reading your post and trying to be of help.

This painting reminds me of work done by the PBS artist Bob Ross on some of his shows filmed before his death. The signature of course doesn't look anything like that.

You know Oneguy, I almost want to say I saw him paint this one as I look at those mountains. I can almost hear his words as to why he used this color and that. How do you read the signature on the image submitted?

I was thinking the same things myself! If you look at the water and the method for smearing in the reflections of the things on land, it also seems to be the same style... I get Helmat for the signature, but if it was someone who took a class, they took a great deal of courses not just a beginning one!

Ha Ha, That is exactly what I thought when my husband first brought it home, I used to watch that show too. I also saw a painting on eBay by a G Whitman that looked like it could have been the same artist , the signature isn't the same though.
The painting isn't our style, we like a more contemporary style with Asian and African influences. I just wanted to check before giving it away.
Also, I was able to resize the picture in my Hp image zone program to email size, then uploading it to photobucket makes it really easy to copy. Thanks for all the help! Diane.

Hi in the screen when you make the question you will be find a paper clip icon hit there and follow the instruccions.
