Married Dual State Tax (NY , PA).. File Separately?
    Hi All,
I have a question. I recently started a job here in PA (state flat rate tax ~3.07%) and commute back to NYC on the weekends. My wife still lives/works in NY (city and state ~10%). We haven't decided on whether to move to PA or not. For this year should I change my address to a place here in PA and become a state residence. That way would it be possible for her to file in NY while I file my state tax in PA for 2006 returns. It would definitely save quite a bit. Right now I am having NY state,NYC and PA state taxes withheld. Is this even possible?
    Thanks,
    John

    John:

Even if you formally established PA as your state of residence, you would still have to file a NY state tax return and a NYC tax return as a part-year residence.

Right now, you have to file PA and NY state income tax returns (NYC is embedded in the NY state form) for both 2005 and 2006. NY state will give you a credit for the PA taxes paid.

You need to give your income and deduction data to an experienced tax pro and allow him/her to run the various scenarios with his/her tax software to determine which is the best way to go.
