The Nikon d40 is a digital SLR. The SLR lenses have an auto focusing feature. So as soon as you press the shutter halfway the lens first automatically locks on to the object, brings it in focus (passive auto focus) and then the shutter is activated. This generally happens in one single action. So in the LITERAL sense you can just "point and shoot". But I guess it would be derogatory to classify the d40 as a point and shoot camera.

It is considered a point and shoot because it doesn't offer as many features that the higher models do. Also, the D40 is a lot smaller than the higher models and is not compatible with a ton of Lens that the other models are.

I've got an Nikon Coolpix 3700 using EN-EL5 batteries. According to the documentation I should be able to get 250-300 pictures per cycle but I'm only getting 100. This is just using the camera normally with some previewing and no editing.
