I have a downstairs toilet that the flange is all broke on. Apparently the owners prior to me cut the flange out and liquid nailed a new one in. The house sits on a slab. My idea was to drill some holes and screw the flange into the slab. Replacement PVC flange has screw holes (for some purpose). In drilling through the slab I have hit something about 1.5 inches down that I can't get through. Don't know what it is, I'm thinking it maybe rebar in there for support or even some type of steel collar (though I wouldn't know why)

Any ideas?

Sounds like you ran into the wire mesh they use for reinforcing. Why are you drilling so deep? Plastic inserts are only about 1" deep and you can use wood screws to secure the new closet flange. Another option would be Tap-Con cement screws instead of inserts. Good luck, tom

I'm using Tap Con, but the shortest they had was 1 3/4 so that's what I got. Thought about plastic inserts for about 1 second, didn't think they would hold, with all the squirming trying to get a good position. I isn't a small guy.

If the toilet's set correctly with out rocking it will set solid and all the "rockin & rollin" you do on that throne won't disturb those plastic inserts. Good luck, Tom
