    Filing inlaws as dependents
    Hi,

My mother and father inlaw have been living with me and my husband for over a year now. They do not work. I was told that they have owed on their taxes for almost ten years and still do. Is that possible? And Can I claim them as dependents and if I do will I owe?

    Thanks

Yes you can claim them as dependent if
    1. They are U.S. residents or citizen
    2. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $3,400.
    3. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
    4. You cannot claim a married person who files a joint return as a dependent unless that joint return is only a claim for refund and there would be no tax liability for either spouse on separate returns.

If your inlaws owe taxes, then you won't owe that amount just by claiming them dependents.

Agreed! YOUR tax situation and theirs are completely separate.

More than likely, they are on Social Security which the IRS cannot touch if that is their ONLY source of income.
