What kind of water do you give him? Maybe you should try some spring water or some kind of water from the grocery store until you can get him checked.
There could be a chemical in the tap water he is developing a serious reaction to.

First, it's good that you are taking the dog to the vet, since I really have no clue what is causing this. Just given the association of drinking with the event, I might be looking at electrolyte balances in the blood, but I wouldn't expect that dramatic of an event in such a short time.

    Dear Hol
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's condition. My 10 year old Jack Russell has just started exhibiting exactly the same behavious when drinking. Did you ever find out what the problem was or manage to find a way to treat it?
    Kind regards
    Paul

It could be something as simple as the dog holding its breath while it's drinking. Could also be something a bit more sinister, I've never heard of it personally so hopefully the vet knows what's going on :)

Drinking a lot of water lately [ 2 Answers ]

I've been kind of thirsty lately, but only when I am bored. Like if I'm watching TV or reading a book I might feel thirsty. Mostly at night and when I wake up. I've always been a water drinker and I'm very healthy. I thought maybe this might be diabetes, but I have no other symptoms. I don't...
