    Problems with things receiving power and signals
    I've just built a new computer. Everything has been plugged in correctly but a few things are not working. When the power button is pressed, the processor fan starts up and the SATA HD starts to whir. But the monitor does not receive a signal and the DVD writer (IDE connection) is not receiving power at all. Also the mouse and keyboard do not light up. It seems like a problem with the power supply, so I tried the setup with a PSU from an old computer. This time, the same thing happen except I didn't even press the power button on the front. The fan and SATA drive started going straight away and the power button on the front of the computer did not light up and holding it in wouldn't turn it off.

    Ideas?

    One of two things is happening there. Either your power supply is not powerful enough to power your new equipment which is least likely or your motherboard is fried. It may be that you have a dud there or that static electricity played a roll when you built it into the case. Either way you would be able to swap it around at the place that you bought it. Another thing that you might want to check is the screws that are underneath the motherboard to hold it to the case. You might have put in an extra bolt on the bottom making the motherboard touch the case which in turn is going to screw around with your power.
