Hi, I got a kitty around Christmas time from a pet store and she seemed fine when she got home, just a little diarrhea that disappeared in the first few days. Over about the last week or so the kitty, who is now about 12 weeks old started sneezing often, had eye discharge, runny nose, and coughs once in awhile. At times the symptoms seem to get better, like the eye discharge has almost disappeared, but she is still sneezing a lot, has discharge out her nose and is coughing. Also, my older cat that is about 16 years old is now coughing once in a while, sneezing, and just today I noticed that she is walking stiffly and likes to sit by the heater. I thought that the kitty may have had a cold that would be going away, but now that my older cat is acting sick as well (she has never acted this way before, and I've had her since she was a kitty) I am concerned and am wondering what may be wrong with them. I haven't contacted a vet, because I've been short on funds, but I'm planning on calling one tomorrow, because they just don't seem to be getting any better.

Definitely call the vet and make an appointment asap.

I had adopted a young cat from a shelter. He coughed and sneezed and had a runny nose. The vet said the cat had a poor immune system and a cold, and then gave him a shot to boost the immune system. The vet thought maybe the cat hadn't gotten enough immunity from the mother's milk.

(In the future, never put a new animal in with a family pet until the new one has been checked by a vet and has been pronounced healthy.)

First of all you shouldn't have animals that you can't afford.

Your kitten may have feline AIDs that make it susceptible to everything. While your at the vets have it vaccinated.

caspercent... I find your answer very rude to the op. She said she was going to call the vet. She did say that she has a 16 year old cat as well. That alone shows, she is dedicated to the care and well being of an animals. We all know, cats do not just make it to 16 years of age on their own.
