So sorry to hear about your back, that's really awful. My dad has herniated discs and he has to walk everyday. That really helps him. I don't know if that would help you because I am not sure of the difference between a crushed disc and a herniated one. He also finds that a warm shower helps to ease the pain. But this is no substitute for medical attention. Maybe your doctor can make some suggestions or refer you to someone who can help! I hope you find some relief.

Since you say that they are the same thing, I can tell you the rest of the things that were recommended to my father. He goes to the chiropractor regularly as well as doing some stretching excercises that he got from him (the chiropractor, I mean). He also wears comfortable shoes with thick soles. He is a paramedic and still manages to work twelve hour shifts and carry heavy patients on stretchers so maybe some of these things will help you! Best of luck!

Hello, Christine. I'm sorry about your back problem. It's always best to follow the doctor's advice and take their prescriptions. But since you don't like taking pain killers internally. You might want to try Hot or cold packs. Applying heat or cold may relieve pain. Hot or cold packs or sometimes a combination of the two can be soothing to chronically sore, stiff backs. Heat dilates the blood vessels, improving the supply of oxygen that the blood takes to the back and reducing muscle spasms. Heat also alters the sensation of pain. Cold may reduce inflammation by decreasing the size of blood vessels and the flow of blood to the area. Also, you may find topical analgesics helpful. Creams, ointments, and salves are rubbed directly onto the skin over the site of pain. They use one or more of a variety of ingredients to ease pain. Topical analgesics include such products as Zostrix, Icy Hot, and Ben Gay. But if you experience excruciating back pain please see your doctor as soon as possible.

Hi,
I know you said your doctor told you there was nothing that could be done. But, have you considered getting another opinion? If you haven't seen a spinal specialist, please do. If you already have, I apologize for mentioning it.
My wife has three deteriorating discs in her spine, and has "good" days and "bad" days. Has had them for about 10 yrs now. Surgery might be an option later, but not now.
She doesn't like taking so many pills either, but Neorontin really does help her. You really have to consider the options: What quality of life do you want? I know you want a good life, without pain. Sometimes, one has to take prescription medications to achieve that.
Sleeping on your back, with a large pillow under your knees, helps to relieve the pressure on the spine, and might help relieve the pain.
Others have made suggestions, so that's the only "new" one I know.
I do wish you the best; and Happy New Year.

Hi I am 46 , but at the age of 29 I got told I had two crushed discs and that I would be in a wheelchair by time I was 30 , they offered me the opp which I was advised from my doctor not to take as it is only a 50/50 success rate , I took her advice and all those yrs on I am not in a wheelchair but now have been diagnosed with ostioparosis , and my back is killing me , they have told me that they can't do anything apart from the opp which I do not want , I have learned to live with the pain althou now it is gettting more unbareable than ever . Some times I can't get out of bed in morning as my back has gone into spasm . I am still working a full time job , but yes it is starting to get me down as now I am in constant pain with it.. but determined I am not giving up .
