Another problem I'm having is that I cannot install drivers and when I click owner its taking longer than normal to load. Recently had a virus apdoor, got rid of it but wondering if when I got rid of it I've perhaps damaged the registry . Have got my win install cd is there a fix function on this

Sounds like your machine needs some cleaning.
First of run Trend Housecall, it's a online based antivirus and anti spyware scanner. Choose the FULL scan option and DELETE everything it finds.
Right then time to remove all of your rubbish files. Try ccleaner as it removes all excess files and cleans your reag as well.
Then its time for a defrag. OPen my computer, right click C drive, properties, tools tab and choose defragment now.
While you are there you can set an error check to run as this will also help, its at the top of the tools page, click the error checking button, select all the check boxes, click OK and OK to the error message then reboot Let the scanner do its work, this can take a long time to run.
Also worth running are Adaware and Spybot both excellent spyware scanners.

    Hope this helps a little

Once you have tried ALL the above then post back and we'll go through how to do a repair with your XP disc, but and it's a big BUT it must be a FULL install version and NOT an upgrade version.
