Becoming a cop with a DUI
I have a DUI on my record from about 10 years ago. Could I still become a police officer with this on my record? I live in Houston, TX (which I will apply to HPD as well as West University, and Montgomery County Police Department). What are my chances of being accepted? Thanks for your answers and suggestions. Also, is there any way to take a DUI "off" your record? Thanks again.:p

    Hello Acie:

I'm not an odds maker but I'll give you 3 to 1 in your favor.

You can have your DUI expunged, but it will still show for law enforcement.

PS> You better be a GOOD cop.

The police chief of the city where I lived for more than half my life was a hellraiser in his teens and early twenties. DUI was just one of his accomplishments. He entered the service and changed his attitude. Came out, went to college, became a police officer, working his way up to police chief. Change can happen.

Good luck to you, hope you accomplish your heart's desire.

It will not hurt in most departments, but if you want to be a officer apply to about 10 or 12 departments at least, since there ia a lot of compitition for each opening.
