Centri - from latin "centrum" meaning center
Petal - from latin "peto" meaning I seek
Fugal - from latin "fugeo" meaning I throw, or flee.

    Centripetal - center seeking force
    Centrifugal - center throwing force

Centripetal is the only real force here, and is responsible for circular motion.

Centrifugal force is how centripetal force is viewed from a rotation reference point.
