Circulator pump works but oil burner does not fire
    Hello,

I have a 2 zone heating system, forced hot water with oil burner/boiler. Also heats domestic hot water tank/coil.

Everything works fine EXCEPT zone 2, which is only the living room. When the thermostat is turned up, the circulator pump goes on but the oil burner will not.

The system has all Honeywell parts... RA832a relay for zone 2, L847 box for zone 1, aquastat for domestic water tank, and stack relay RA117.

I don't know where to begin because the system works in zone 1 and for the domestic water. I've had service tech out here but he couldn't find the problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated... thx

Here is a wiring diagram for you.

    http://customer.honeywell.com/techli...0s/69-0791.pdf

If one zone is not working then isloate your trouble shooting to it.

The RA832A has two sets of contacts. One can be used for the circulator and the other for the burner. I believe one set of contacts ( for the burner in the boiler) to be defective. If so you will have to replace the control. I would also recommend you find a better repair person than the last one to diagnosis this defect and to replace this control if necessary.

Of course you are right... inside the RA832 the circulator and thermostat wires are connected as well as the hot line coming from zone 1 relay box.

Is the problem where the RA832 connects inside the boiler?

    Thanks for response!

The boiler works. The problem has to do with the ONE circuit that is not working. The box in the boiler works on the one zone so it should be OK.

In other words the burner is not getting a signal to light off and burn when the thermostat calls for heat. But the circulator works so the problem is isolated to the burner/controls for that zone.

You need a meter and know how to use it in order to track the problem down. This time get a guy who knows about boilers to find that problem for you. At least you are now partially armed and dangerous so do not let the repair man rip you off. If they cannot find the problem do not pay them since they could not fix it and call someone else until you find the right person for the job.

Thanks hvac1000 for the good advice.

I am an amateur with a mulitmeter and was hoping to fix problem myself but am not that sure of the electrical controls, is this something I can do myself?

    Thanks again!

Check to see if the #2 zone valve is opening when the thermostat is turned up. Touch the pipe on both sides of the valve. The pipe should be equally hot on both sides of the zone valve. The valve could be faulty. It is also possible there is a restriction in your zone #2 such as air in the line or a frozen pipe. ChasB
