    Windows ME LAN connection
I am working on a gentleman's computer and had to reinstall ME for him. Once the install was complete I installed the driver for his NIC card and tried to get connected to the net on one of our lines running from our router here at the store.

The NIC is setup with DHCP and all other computers running XP home and professional do not have the problem. I have run the internet setup wizard as well. I have also tried winsocfix and lspfix with no help.

When I open internet explorer it says that it is detecting proxy settings and then gives me error, This page cannot be displayed. I have tried his original NIC and also one of our new NIC's here at the store with no resolution.

Now the real kicker is that when I connect our USB NIC card to the system it connects to the internet just fine.

    Any help on this?

I am a computer dummy, did you turn off the firewall to see if that helped. I am not sure about ME, but 2000 and above should all work, which came first, ME or 2000?

I checked and could not find a firewall setting with ME. The weird part is that any NIC I put into the machine through PCI slots gives me issues, it notices and installs drivers or I install drivers for it but still will not connect to the internet. But when I put in our USB NIC card I have no problems.

I had a problem once, that drove me absolutely nuts until I called a friend. It turned out that the computer had built-in Power line networking. That's the device it was grabbing.

Take a look at ipconfig /all and the device manager to make sure that there are no other adapters.

There is no firewall in ME.

On a different though related note, if anyone asked me to install ME, I would do whatever I could to talk them out of it. In my opinion, it is one of the buggiest, if not the overall buggiest O/S ever released. I ran it on a computer one, and after three re-installs in a period of less than 2 months, I went back to Win98, which ran just fine.
