As far as I know, that must be done through the breeder. You might check American Kennel Club - akc.org If your dog's parents weren't registered, you can't register yours.

I don't think AKC registers Pit Bull. It is a sloppy term applied to several breeds of bull dogs. RubyPitbull can tell you more.

Although most of my puppies are purebreds, they aren't registered. Many of the regulars here have rescue dogs that aren't registered.

You are right labman. The AKC does not recognize the Pitbull as a breed. It recognizes the American Staffordshire Terrier as a breed. The UKC recognizes the American Pitbull Terrier as a breed.

Gin, labman is also correct in that the breeder is the person who can supply you with the information you need and/or paperwork. If your dog is a rescue, there is very rarely any way of knowing the parentage, and confirming anything. If you bought from a breeder who doesn't have paperwork to give to you, you can ask where they got their dogs from. If it was another breeder, you can contact that person if your breeder is willing to give that info out, and start doing a back track search from there. But, if your breeder has no information to give to you, there is no way of tracing the parentage/lineage and receiving paperwork on your dog.

That is somewhat off topic to this thread, but others may be interested too. I think they do register the breeding stock. Since all the rest are spay/neutered, it would be perhaps small, but useless expense to register them. They do assign an ID number to all the dogs they accept for training. They used to tattoo it in the ear. Aster has one. They chip them now.

Trust me, they don't need the AKC to keep records for them. Along with many other schools, they are working with Penn State on a huge project to relate genetics and behavior. I did questioniers on 2 of my puppies for it.

Of course physical problems are very important too.
