There are several ways to do this. You should hook them up in two ways If you have an hdmi cable you can run this to the TV from the hd/dvr and from the dvr/r (needs two hdmi cables ) these will run about $40 each. Or from the hd/dvr run composite cables .They are green blue and red(picture only) and a left and right audio (red and white).this will give you picture to the TV only from the hd/dvr. Then from the other output on the box(hd/dvr) run a rca lead (these are yellow red and white) to the input on the back of the dvr/r then run a set of then same rca leads to the back of the TV. This will give tou the ability to record anything that is playing on the digital box

I can't get a picture through my recorder unless I use the coax in/output on recorder but I have to bypass the box with a coax splitter and then I only get analog channels

can you get a picture on the TV from the dvd make sure the dvd/r is on the correct input and the TV is on the correct input If you can get a picture on the TV then the input is correct on the dvd/r it should be input one it will be labeled where you put the cables in (usually) input two will be the input on the front If you have to use a splitter you won't be able to record channels above 100 You could bypass the splitter and run the coax out from the hd/dvr to the dvd/r . Most hd/dvr's are preset to channel 4 while dvd/r /vcr's are preset to ch 3 . So you will have to change the output of the hd box to channel 3 This can be done by getting the cable remote press setting 2x go dow to output ch and change to 3

I think the problem is selecting the correct input or output. Could be Tv/Video, Source.
Channel 3 or 4 is used when using Coax. Video for others.

I'm just searching around. Don't know if you have solved this problem. But here is what I know. When you hook up an HDMI cable out from your HD/DVR, it shuts off you analog out signal (component). If your not using HDMI, and your sending out 1080I /720p from your DVR to DVDR, you will not be able to record it. Your DVDR is not HD, hence the black screen. The cable companies / movie studios will not allow you to get your hd content out of your DVR. They don't want a bunch of high quality copies of their material out on the street.
I have heard of a couple tv's that have Esata ports on them that would allow you to record your hd content that your watching onto another hardrive. Mitsubishi.
And no the sata port on your cable box is not hooked up.
Good luck.
