I went on vacation and left my dog with my daughter and cousin. My dog is a beagle bassett and ever since I got home she barks whenever I put her to bed. The bark is different and she shakes really bad and runs from me barking unlike anything I have seen. She also crouches down and looks up at the ceiling, almost like her vision is going bad or something. She seems to be eating more and swallowing a lot. Any advise.
My vet put her on Valium which will eventually knock her out but I don't want to live like that.:confused:

I am a zoologist, but I don't know a lot about dogs. To me, it sounds like your dog had some kind of traumatic experience. But I think you should repost this at Pets and animals, under health. There are some really knowledgeable people there who know lots about dogs. Meanwhile, be patient with her and give her lots of love. Good luck! Asking

I don' like the sound of this at all. Will her eyes track your hand if you move it in front of her face? Try a treat or a ball. If not, get back with the vet. I almost want to suggest a different one.

Otherwise, give her plenty of attention and love. If something bad happened, the Valium may help temporarily, and she will come out of it.

I have asked to have your question moved to the Dog Forum. It is tucked away in Home and Garden. I agree with that. Many dog questions have right and wrong answers even if there is not any national building code for dog care.

Thank you. She does eat a treat and calm down. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow morning. It is just so random, the bark is different, her look is different, its just not my dog and she only does it at night..

Light is highly critical in low vision cases. I will be 64 next Monday. I am more quick than ever to turn lights on.

I'm guessing you were gone on vacation awhile, a week or so... it could be lingering separation anxiety. Spend extra time with her, give her extra attention, but do so when she isn't barking or doing other things you don't want her to do... she may have to get use to you again. If you don't sleep in a room with her, you may need to learn to get tough with her a bit... don't tell her "its okay" when she barks to reassure her that it is okay; she will perceive that as her barking is okay. Personally, I let my companions sleep with me and there's no problem, but if that's not for you, you may have to consider alternatives if trying to authoritatively getting her to hush don't work: a bark collar (ugh!) or sessions with a doggy behavioralist (a bit $$$ but can be worth it for you).
