Recently we noticed water coming up from underneath the basement toilet after our above-ground pool sprung a leak, which was probably in September. We repaired the pool liner and thought that the problem would have been a one-time event, however during some heavy rains lately as well as my husband's overzealous use of the hose on the backside of the house we saw the water coming in again. We are not sure where to begin in this situation, and we have also now got a possibly related but probably not issue with out basement floor drain which is next to the bathroom but separated by a wall.

On one of the occasions that water came up from underneath the toilet, a small amount also came up from the drain. It only happened one time.

Today, after taking a bath/shower upstairs, I came downstairs and noticed a puddle of water surrounding the floor drain, but when I checked the bathroom it was dry. We are at a loss here, as we are also trying to figure out if any of this is covered under our 1 year home warranty. We are city septic and water, and the house was built in the late '70s. Also, we have had no rain in the past few days.

The lowest fixture,( your floor drain ) will back up first followed by a tub , shower or another floor drain on up the line. Sounds like you have two problems. A partial blockage in your drainage system down stream from the floor drain and a ground water drainage problem on the outside. The partial clog can be resolved by snaking from the basement toilet or the lavatory roof vent. The ground water coming up under the basement toilet is another matter. What could have happened is that when the pool sprung a leak the water opened up a channel leading to your foundation .
Excessive rain and hubbys watering didn't help either. A french drain might have to be installed to carry the ground water away from your house. You will have to check out the home owners assoc. docs and your warranty to see if you're covered but my gut feeling is that you're not. Good luck, tom
