16 year olds pay FICA but don't file their own taxes, so I think you will have to file her on yours. Talk to a tax expert to be sure, maybe go to a tax preparer.

How much is she earning? That makes the difference, normally they earn less than the amount required to file, Normally you will still claim them as a dependent

If a child works and earns OVER $8,700 annually, they are REQUIRED to file a tax return.

If they earn less, they MAY file a tax return to get back a refund of the federal and state income taxes withheld.

When filing this return, they normally should NOT claim their own personal exemption, as that exemption is worth MORE to the parents, who are typically in a higher tax bracket.

I think she files her own. My parents told me that I would have to this year, I'm only 17. But it might depend on where you are, what the job was, etc.
My dad said all I'd have to do is file a W4 and that was it, since she's only 16 (and assumably in school) she'll probably get all her money back.
    Good Luck!

How much the refund will be depends on how much he/she earns.
