I am not sure what you mean that the crate didn't work. Of course, if you are leaving him alone in the house all day, you can expect problems. I have found that even 7 week old puppies do fine in a crate 4-5 hours, but don't like to see any dog left longer than that. You should be able to leave him it a crate 4-5 hours. If you can't make it back, try to find a neighbor or professional dog walker to give him a mid day break. Another good solution is doggy day care.

When you are around you need to keep a close eye on the dog. Use closed doors or gates to keep it in the same room as you are, and perhaps as I do, a short chain fastened to the computer desk. If you catch it in the act, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and take it out. When you can't watch it, crate it.

Hmm, well yes I agree with labman as well. Also show him what he's done but clean it up when he is not looking or else he might think that it is okay to do it because your just going to clean it up. Don't rub his nose in it though. If your in a certain room a lot then have your pup in there with you so you have an eye on him. If he starts whining look at him and ask him if he has to go. But pick a certain worf like "Do you have to go" or "Do you gotta do your buisness" phrases like that. And he might bark or spin around or go to the door. When your out with him pick a phrase like " Do your businness" "better go" "hurry up" "Go to the bathroom" so then he knows it okay to go now. You could also Try feeding him certain times of the day like when you do. So then after he eats he will probably need to go. If your not home a lot then try makinga kennel with a fenced in area that your pup can run around in with its food and water out with it ' I'm no expert so don't quote me on anyof this'
