I am a nurse in a long term care facility. I found out today that the facility I work for is thinking about taking someone that has MRSA... I know the affects of MRSA on the healthy unpregnant adult, but am very concerned since I am 34 weeks pregnant. I plan to call my doctor if this woman is admitted, but until then, I am having trouble finding statistics on the effects of MRSA to pregnancy. Any help would be Great.

If you are a nurse you should know that you should use standard precautions on a patient with MRSA. Is it possible you talk to your DON and ask not to be placed as this person's caretaker?

I always use universal precautions, however the type of facility I work in doesn't have any type of isolation so this person will be allowed out of the room. The MRSA is in the nares, which I know isnt such a threat as anywhere else. But being that this person will not be in isolation is what worries me...the person will be allowed to walk in the hallway, touch who and what she wants...I just need to find somewhere that tells me the risks to my unborn baby, that is my main concern especially since this person is someone I will have to care for. I work in an assisted living/personal care complex for which I am the only nurse on duty for 94 residents...so if something were to happen to this person I would have no choice but to care for her, which is why I am so concerned about the wellbeing of my baby.
