I love my jack russel terrior to death! She is the sweetest dog we've ever had.. and even though a lot of people talk about how hyper they are, she is a great dog that loves to cuddle up to you.. sometimes it even looks like she's smiling lol. But enough about that

She loves to burrow under the covers in bed and sleep and I think she gets hot and sweats a little. We give her baths regularly, but she always ends up smelling like corn chips. Is there such thing as doggy deoderant or something that we could use to prevent this corn chip smell?

Girl!! I need that same question answered!! I have a Dachshund and she is the same way, except that she don't smell like corn chips, its actually a little worse! I bathe her all the time and put lots of smelly goods on her, but like after a week, she's back to smelling bad. I have to constantly clean the couch that she lays on because it smells just like her. I def. need to see what others post about this question...

Yep.. exactly the same here about 1 week and she smells like it again.. I feel bad because I love her to death and want her to sit on my lap and stuff.. but it gets to the point where I have to make her hop down..
She also has really bad breath.. I've tried everything for that too and nothing seems to help.

What are you feeding your dog? Are you giving her people food or sticking solely to a good quality chow? Is she playing with other dogs? Is she rolling in anything? Are you brushing her out on a daily basis? With a good quality chow and daily brushing, you shouldn't be experiencing the bad breath or the "body odor."

When my dog was a puppy and now, maybe a couple of times a year, she smells like corn chips. It is usually after playing with other dogs, excessive exercise, or rolling around on the ground. I actually don't find the smell offensive. There are a lot more odors that are offensive to me, like urine and feces. :eek:

I feed a decent chow, brush regularly, and seldom if ever bathe my dogs. They do fine with no odor problem. It sounds like you both may be bathing the dog too often and creating problems. Also, have the vet check them.

They don't have a chance to roll in stuff? Sometimes you must clean up their relief area.

Well... we do feed her a good chow.. she eats that everyday.. every once in a while we give her a pinch of people food... but not too much. She goes for walks a lot.. she doesn't roll around or play with other dogs because she's scared of them.. she has short fur.. we brush her but she really doesn't need to be brushed that often.
Maybe it's the exercise?

Mw, she may be short haired, but she needs a good daily brushing. It gets rid of the loose hairs, and helps spread the natural oils which keep the skin healthy. My dog has VERY short hair, that is babyfine. Her hair is so short that she needs to wear a coat in the cold weather. However, I brush her every day with a very soft brush, actually it is a man's hairbrush! But, it does the job nicely. I exercise her a lot every day. She is a terrier too and needs it or else she gets what I call the pit crazies. She will run through the house like a lunatic on a mission. She doesn't smell.

Smell your dog's ears. If there is an unpleasant odor, she may have an ear infection and you should bring her into the vets office for a check up and medication. If it isn't the ears, you should consider speaking with your vet about this problem if you feel that there is something wrong. Have the vet check for skin infections. :confused:

OK, so I've got the same prob. See, my grandfather had this dog for several years. I moved in with him in early 2006 to take care of him because he was very ill. He then died and I've been here since, so I adopted the dog rather than get rid of her. I love her to death because she's sweet, very smart, and holds sentimental value, as you can imagine. I don't know how old she was when he got her, but I know she was an adult and he had her for at least 5 yrs before he passed... so... I'm estimating her to be about 7-8 yrs old. I've been thinking that maybe it had something to do with her age... I don't know why... I know her teeth are really bad.. some missing. I figured that was the cause of her bad breath and, I, too have tried everything to get rid of the bad breath, but nothings worked. I feed her well... she loves purina mighty dog, soft food, in the can... thats about all she will eat. One thing she does do is roll around on the floor, like all the time, as if she's trying to scratch her back. My grandpa used to say she was "rockin and rollin".. lol... other than that, she only goes outside to use the bathroom or occasionally ride somewhere with me, she does not interact with other dogs, and she never gets people food. Now, I don't brush her. I've never saw a reason to because her hair is so short and course-like. I just thought you were supposed to brush dogs w/long hair... guess I was wrong!. oh well...

1 of my dogs smells like corn bread and has never been ill since I have had him. The 1st dog I ever had smelled like corn bread all the years I had him he was never ill except a rash on his leg once. Btw both mixed with terriers. I love corn bread and so do my kids... so we don't mind

Well see, I have to feed her soft food because of her teeth... she can't chew very well... really, her teeth are really bad, its so pitiful... I can afford to take her to a vet, but I might not can afford extensive treatment for her... thanks for your time... I will try to get her to the vet asap!

We have broken coated JRT (longish, roughish... wild eyebrows and beard) and she gets feetsie! Like fritos.

She gets good low-grain dry food now. We brush her teeth and had a cleaning a month ago.

Her pads were dry and rough.. she used to lick them a lot. Vet gave a spray for bacteria (I think) also a fish oil spray for her food.

Do a Google search for dog feet corn chips... it'll show we're not alone.

Well I just found a ladys answer on another that her vet said it has something to do with the breed, what they eat and their sweat. But I am sure if I search enough I'll find many different reasons.

The spray was a cleanser/anti-bacterial and it helped a little. Her feet aren't as bad now, but she does get a bit pantsy after a few weeks. We don't want to bathe her too often, but when she gets ripe she needs it.

How's your cheese-puff? Do you have an update?

The bad breath could be caused by bad teeth. It sounds like the dog could do with a good dental exam, cleaning, extractions, etc. Which is important, because if the dog has bad breath from stinky stuff in his mouth, then when he grooms himself, he is spreading the stinky stuff onto his fur.
