    Turning the heat on
    When heating the house should the thermostat be on fan or auto?

    It should be on auto because when the temp goes down the thermostat will come on automatically whichever heat you have it set at. What made you think the fan should be turned on? The fan goes on automatically at the same time the thermostat tells it to.
