My dog cries when I leave, even if my husband is home.
My dog cries when I leave, even if my husband is home. He howls and carries on and then wonders around the entire time I am gone. I thought dogs only did this for attention or when no one was home. But no matter what my husband does, he won't stop. Do you have any tips on how we can fix this?

Sounds like separation anxiety. Labman or Ruby will give you good help as soon as they come online.

It is quite common for a dog to be better bonded to one family member than the other. Your dog needs to learn both you and your husband outrank him. The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at Raising Your Dog with the Monks of New Skete For more on being top dog, see Establishing and Keeping Alpha Position, Letting your dog know you are the boss

Your husband needs to spend more time with him, perhaps taking over most of the feeding. It also needs to include drilling him in his obedience commands.
