I have rented a RIGID chain cutting tool to cut my soil stack, I'm just not sure if I should use it like a tubing cutter or simply keep tightening till something gives. (as the name soil stack snapper, implys)?

You need to rotate the cutter back and forth every time you tighten up the chain in order to score the pipe with the cutting wheels -- Failure to do so may result in a jagged cut, a crushed cut or a fracture along the pipings casting seam.

What you have is a set of ratchet cutters. Follow growlers advice and don't tighten the chain so much it crushes the cast iron. I use ratchet cutters on a vertical cut or in a tight area. For a horizontal pipe cut in a open area I use a set of snap cutters. Good luck, Tom
