How to tell if my dogs leg is broken?
My Japanese Chin hurt his leg somehow 2 days ago. How can I tell if it's broken? He can put some weight on it but then it's like it gives out. I can't afford a vet bill. What can I do?

Likely about the same as for people, bent at a funny angle and pain. If you decide it is broken, what are you going to do?

Japanese Chins are one of those breeds that you don't hear much about and more expensive than most. How did you afford to buy him if you can't afford vet fees? Very curious post. I saw your other post where you mentioned swelling on the leg and I didn't answer because I didn't know what breed you had and I kind of wondered why the vet didn't make any recommendations. I just don't like recommending anything without the vet's approval. Now that I know the breed you must be very careful. Japanese Chins are very small. If you give the wrong dosage of buffered aspirin, your dog could be in trouble. If his leg gives out when he tries to stand on it, then it doesn't sound like a simple sprain which takes a few weeks to heal. I suggest that you find some way to pull the money together (borrow from a friend or relative?) and get your dog to the vet pronto. The possibility of a fractured leg is nothing to fool around with. If you hurt yourself like that and wasn't sure if your leg was broken, wouldn't you go to the doctor?

If you don't know and he keeps being in pain, call the vet, and take him. Ask the vet if you can work out a payment plan so that you can afford the bill. Your pet's health is important, and if you can't afford to care for him, you should find him a home that can.
