I have and older Furnace with Hot water Cast Iron radiators (2 floor, 1300 sq ft house). Had to turn on furnace for first time over weekend and it took about 50 min to get the temp from 63 up to 66. The radiators heat unevenly and I was listening for the circulating pump to go on so I could bleed the system. Is this something I should be able to hear? When should it kick in (how long, temp, etc). The send pipes are quite warm until you get about 15 feet from the furnace and then they are warm/cold. Finally, if the pump is not working, is it likely the pump or the electronic controls? (pump is TACO cartridge - 007f3).

You can test the pump circuit with a Amprobe to check the curent draw and that will tell you if the pump is running. You can bleed air with the pump off also but it will not bleed as well. Check your expansion tank to make sure it is not full of water.

Take a screwdriver and place the handle end to your ear like a stethoscope, place the blade on the pump... do you hear the pump running ? And does the boiler burners burn fully? The main question is the boiler and related piping completely full of water ? If not, you will never pump heated water around the system. Check the boilers pressure gage, it should be around 12 lbs of system pressure, and for baseboard radiant, the boiler temp should peak out at around 180 degree F.. before the boiler aquastat shuts down the burners.
