HI Does anyone know what goes into a kitchen 1st when renovating? Floors? Or cabinets?
The cabinet people say the floors go in first and the floor guy is telling me the cabinets go in 1st because when they come to put in the cabinets if the new floors is in it could get ruined.

Seriously, I think cabinets first. For the reason the floor guy mentioned.

Putting the new floor in first makes a nice seam at the edge of the cabinet. Poke under your existing cabinets or dishwasher, and you will see the original floor continues under it. Find a new floor guy.

Just my two cents but I have installed a lot of floors and cabinets in my time and to me it depends on the flooring material sheet vinyl for instance as an installer its much easier for me without cabinets but the floor is more easily damaged than say hardwood so if its vinyl I would put the cabinets in first. If its prefinished hardwood I would probably put the floor down first and then cover the floor with protective paper and tell the cab guys hey new floor be careful. If you go with ceramic tile cabinets go in first saves material and the cabinet guys can nail into the subfloor if they need to. However be aware that if tile is used you need to leave enough clearance under your cabs for slide appliances like dishwasher. Like I said just my two cents.

We tend more to install the cabnits first, mainly when your installing them you tend to slide the cabnits around abit possibly scratching the floor, you'll also have a few tools out that can potentually drop damaging the floor,

Also you have to buy less flooring if the cabnits are already there.

If they end up doing the floor first must lay some paper down and tape it to the floor to protect it till there done

We renovated a kitchen in an investment property we own, and put pergo-style flooring in, then the cabinets. A year later there was a water leak and the floors got ruined and needed replaced it was VERY difficult to get the floor up and leave the cabinets in place (but we managed). Putting the flooring in first makes installation easier, but it makes it harder to replace/repair the floor depending on the type later on. In my mom's kitchen we did ceramic tiles and saved money by buying el-cheap-o tiles to install under the cabinets, since they would be covered. You must be careful, as others have said though about scratching the floors.
