I'm replacing my old heat pump thermostat(American Standard) with a Hunter Programmable Thermostat(Model 44360). I have seven wires coming in and they are all connected as follows:


The white comes in and connects to a terminal labeled X2 and jumper goes up to the terminal labeled W.

Green Wire----G
Red Wire------R
Orange Wire---O
Yellow Wire----Y
Brown Wire-----T
Blue Wire-------B


The programmable thermostat's terminal labels are as follows:

G
RC
RH
Y/O
W/B
Y1
Terminals RC and RH has a jumper.


I need to know which wires go where. If I install it how the manual says to, I will have wires not being used. Is this normal?

Usually there is a 24 volt AC transformer in the furnace with the secondary winding connected to a red wire running to the thermostat and a blue wire, common, to the gas valve, A/C relay, and fan relay. From the thermostat there will be white wire to the gas valve, yellow to the A/C, and green to the fan. The thermostat is wired to switch the power from the red to the white, yellow, and green as needed with the blue completing the circuit. Most thermostats and furnaces have the contacts labeled R, B or C, W, Y, and G for the corresponding wire colors. It may be wired to have the A/C control wires return to the furnace and its controls and then a second wire goes to the A/C unit. Internal wiring may replace the green wire if the thermostat does not give you the option of fan only or continuous fan. Digital or programmable thermostats may need the blue wire connected to them.

You are going to have to study the directions for the new thermostat to see if it switches the power from the red wire to the W/B or Y1 when it calls for heat. The others should be like the old one, red to RC-RH. You only need 5 wires for the ordinary functions of the thermostat. The additional wires may be for switching the heat pump between heating and cooling modes. If so, you are going to have to figure out what they did and wire them into an additional switch. If you don't have directions for the heat pump, you may be able to find the information on their website. There may be a schematic on the air handler unit.

Ok! Got it all hooked correctly and now it displays no ac power. Do I need to run a hot wire to it? If so, how do I do that?

Some programmable thermostats must be connected to both terminals of the 24 volt transformer. The red wire to the RH and RC should come from one side. Likely the blue wire comes from the other. Somewhere in the directions for the new thermostat, it should identify the terminal to connect it to, W/B, Y1, It may identify it as common.
