One of the standard tests used in helping people like yourself is the Self Directed Search, which is based on Holland's theory of careers: that we need to find a career that corresponds to the types of things we need to do. It's a preference based instrument: the questions tend to be of the form, "would you rather do X or Y?". There's a lot of data behind the SDS, and when you take it a report is generated that gives your scores in six areas of interest: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. If you go to a career counselor or coach, chances are you'll be given the SDS fairly early in the process. The report includes a list of careers for which individuals with scores similar to yours tend to be happy with as careers. You can then use that as a starting point for your investigations.

You can take the SDS online for 9.95USD; here's the link:

Welcome to the Self-Directed Search...the world's most widely used career interest inventory!
