    Remove faucet stem
    I am trying to repair a leaky faucet in my bathroom sink. I have removed the cap on the handle, removed the screw and pulled off the handle. I am unable to remove the stem. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is a Sayco faucet and could be 20 years old.

    There's a large brass nut on the stem. This is the bonnet packing nut. Unscrew it and turn the stem assembly out counterclockwise. Good luck, Tom

    Any suggestions on unscrewing the bonnet packing nut? I've tried pliers, crescent wrench and a channel lock.

    And we are all 100% sure that you shut off the main, right? Before doing the work Tom recommends you might try just tightening that nut. If it is a packing problem this could be the fix. If not, Tom's recommendation should be followed. He can then tell you what washer and/or seat to replace.

    Give it a shot of penetrating oil and a few raps with a hammer. Then put a 6 point socket on it, a deep well one likely.
