At 18 he will be an adult... so technically what is his reason for wanting to try and sign away his rights?

If he is just wanting to do it since the son is not 18 yet... it is near impossible to do unless there is someone else willing to adopt the son in the fathers place. Parents can't just sign away rights like that.
