    Pipe backup with laundry use
    We recently moved into a home built in the 50's. Every time we do laundry there is a sewer/drain hole that spews out foul smelling water (in the basement). This happens after before the rinse cycle when the water is drained from the machine. We do not have a backup in our wash basin, only from this drain. I only see one drain, not 2 like some other postings. Any idea what this could be? Is it sewage or maybe just a clog that needs to be snaked out? I also read another posting about putting hot water and then bleach down? Don't know which is appropriate in this case. We also have a leak (possibly in the concrete) at the front of the house which is leaking through a wall facing the outside... dont think this is related, but thought I would mention it just in case...

    Hi Lara,
    Are you on city sewer nor a septic tank?
    You have a partial clog that allows the discharge from your wash basin to drain while backing up when the washer discharges. The reason being that while the wash basin drains slowly, without much force, from gravity while the washer discharges from a pump with much more force and volume.
    If this were my call I would take a sewer machine and snake from the washer roof vent. Open up the cleanout cover and put out enough cable to get past it. Then cycle a washer load to flush it down the line. Good luck, Tom
