This sounds complicated. He doesn't want your descion to do anything with him, he wants you to decide what you want to make of your life. He wants you to be internally motivated to do something with your life. What do you do for a living? What are your dreams for the future? I am sure both of these play into the answer he is hoping you provide. Show him you have some individual, unique goals for your life. Do you want to help people? Do you want to produce art? Do you want to learn to knit leg warmers? Tell him your aspirations and dreams for YOURSELF. Tell him your life goals. Ask him what he thinks about them. Ask him for advice on how to reach your goals. Ask for his support. Or don't ask him and make these goals be self fulfilled. But if he matters to you, figure out your passion. I love to bake. It is a hobby, but I could make it into a career if I wanted to. What do you love to do? Is it a hobby? Can it provide long term goals? This is more about examining yourself than finding out how to make your ex happy. Good luck!

He wants you to find a life purpose or goal so that he knows you are independent of him and not a cling on to him.
