Whining Daschund 4 Yrs. Old
2 days ago I adopted a 4 yr. old female short haired daschund and when my husband leaves she whines at the door off and on all day long until he comes home and all is wonderful... I can't take it much more and want to know what to do? M

Sounds like your new girl recognized who the leader is! She is looking for leadership and has found it in your husband. It is now your turn to show you are the female Alpha in this relationship. Dogs view the "beings' they live with as a pack. There is a definite ranking and leadership role in their little heads. Labman has some excellent information regarding this with a link that will help you. He will be by at some point and post it for you. I don't like posting someone else's information. It isn't polite. Maybe what I need to do is add this and some more stuff to the sticky so it is available all the time.
The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at Raising Your Dog with the Monks of New Skete For more on being top dog, see Establishing and Keeping Alpha Position, Letting your dog know you are the boss I think it maybe more than just leadership. She may have been more the man's dog in her old home. You also need to give her more attention, butt rums, ear scratches, and maybe walks. Talk to her. |

What's a butt rum Labman? LOL. Do you mean rub? I agree with the attention. As you know, I am a big advocate of giving doggy massages to rehoused dogs. Helps them relax, puts you in control by being physically above them without intimidating them. I find it calms them down and lessens the confusion of being rehoused.
