    1987 truck dying
I have a 1987 Chevy Scottsdale pick up. The truck is a duel tank model. I have had this truck for 10 years now. It has always had a problem when you put the truck in reverse it would die, but would start right up and would eventually go. Sometimes it would die at a light or when letting off the accelorator. I have had probably 20 ASE mechanics troubleshoot it with no results. I decided I was going to upgrade the truck. I upgraded from the tbi 305 to a Edelbrock multiport injection 350 with a rebuilt 704r transmission. Rebuilt the transfer case and front and rear end. New gas tanks and the Edelbrock system came with new fuel pumps, and put in new oxygen sensors. Even after all that the same problems persist. Only now sometimes when you restart it you have to floor it to keep it running as it seems like it is under a load and has no power then after about a minute of that in nuetral and the power comes back. So I put all new wiring in and it has not died on my but my roommate siad it happened to him 3 times yesterday. I am at a loss. I love my truck and don't want to get rid of it and have enough money in it that this shouldn't happen. I get 26 mpg when the truck is running right and on 33" tires that is pretty good to me. The only things I can think of is the alternator is good but still the old one, got a fuel tank switch on order and have yet to change the gear selector switch. Is there anything else anyone can think of, if so please help.

That sounds like a thirsty beast you've created.
Has anyone suggested verifying the fuel lines and tanks (including fuel pick-ups) be inspected and cleared or cleaned? Perhaps replaced?
You may want to consider, too, a performance fuel pump to keep up with demand.
    Just a thought...

New fuel lines, new tanks. When you say the pick ups do you mean the screens that are around the fuel pumps that sit in the tank? The sock? The computer chip was specifically programmed and tuned by Edelbrock based on the engine build. So long as I keep the truck under 80mph which I always drive no faster than 70mph then I get 23 to 26 mpg. If I were to try and go faster than that which I would never do then my milage drops dramtically. So I think perhaps the chip is doing what it should because to me it would seem like moving those tires any faster would take many horses. Any of this information help?

I've read and re-read your first post (there's a lotta info to take in there) and it seems your largest concern is the cutting off in reverse (?)

Have you tried to manipulate the underhood engine harness while the vehicle is running and sitting still to see if you can induce a stall? What I'm thinking is when the engine torques up in reverse (or actually any engine movement) the harness is shifting and a critical circuit is going open and shutting the engine off...

BTW: I was referring to the fuel pick-up sock. But that probably was replaced with the new provided pump.

Hey thanks for all the help Rich. The dying is I think caused by the same thing what ever is causing it. It was dying before the new motor and everything and it is still doing it. I would think that with the new wiring harness and everything that it wouldn't be in the harness but I will indeed check it again. The fuel socks are new, one thing I didn't think to check and that I haven't had chance to since I read your first post is the fuel filter. When the new lines were put in I would hope that they didn't use the old inline filter under the truck but I guess I need to see if it is there. I will check the wiring to see if there is any affect on the engine.
    Thanks.
