Hi people I don't know if you guys are real dentist but I wanted a bit of information on what happens to most people when they get there wisdoms taken out. I just got my wisdoms taken out and I'm 17 years old. I bin in pain for days, and my face has just blown up like a balloon and I'm embarissed to go to school like this, I don't know when will this pain and face change back to normal if anyone has gone trough this please tell me about it!! And what happens, how long it takes to change back thank you...

I think everyone's effect is different, I had some pain for that evening, maybe some disconfort the next day, I was working the day after.
Have you called your denist and asked him ( or your mom and dad?)

I'm not a dentist but I have had dental surgery. My experience is that you will have swelling and be tender at the site(s) for several days to a week or so. The pain is usually managed by pharmaceuticals. The swelling will disapate first and you'll probably be invited back to the dentist to assure things are going normal. You should be resting and drinking fluids and rinsing with a warm salty-water mix. Call your dentist if conditions persist.

Additionally, I want to add that in the future, two things you and only you need to be aware of and that is your personal dental habits and your personal credit. These are distinctly yours. (Just a word for the wise)

When I had my wisdom teeth out I was useless to the world for about a week. I stayed in an armchair for about a week the only time I moved was to take more percocet. My face was swollen for the whole time and I was still in pain after the percocet was gone. Some people heal faster then others.

If you are concerned that its taking too long to heal call your doctor. I did. I remember thinking my healing was taking way too long.

Some people have a tough time with their wisdom teeth being removed, others have it a lot easier. I was a lucky one, but my friend who had hers done right at the same ended up with a dry socket!

Were you totally sedated for the procedure, or were you awake? Some doctors are a little rougher with patients under full sedation, which can increase bruising and cause swelling. Were your wisdoms impacted or erupted? How many were removed? If they were impacted it will probably take longer to heal, and if you had all of them out at once you will of course have more swelling. Have you been following the instructions your OS gave you? You should be using ice packs and cool compresses to reduce swelling, not using straws and avoiding smoking. Also be sure to take your pain pills and anti-inflamatories on a regular basis to ward off pain and swelling. If you find you are in A LOT of pain, you might have a dry socket. This can happen because of non-compliance with instructions, but it also happens to a certain percentage of patients who follow all the post-op directions to a T. You should have a follow up appointment with your OS (or dentist, whoever took the teeth out) about a week or 10 days after the procedure; at that point they will check your stitches (or see that they have dissolved) and give you more after-care instruction which includes flushing the extraction sites with a little syringe of water.

For now you can try GENTLY rinsing with warm salt water (a pinch of salt to about a shot glass of warm water) but be careful when you spit, just like you are careful when brushing. Remember, you have open wounds, they need to be treated gently. Also drink a lot of water, it will help with swelling. You should notice the swelling go down after a few days, maybe a week or more. It depends on the individual. Don't be surprised if after the swelling goes away you find bruises on your jawline, this is very common. You also might not have full range of motion in your jaw (can't open all the way) for a few weeks. If you are really concerned about anything, give your doctor a call, they should be eager to help you out. And don't be embarrassed about having to clarify instructions, it happens all the time.
