    Renters Rights
    My daughter is renting an apt. off campus (Penn State,PA). There is another tenant in the apt. The other tenant is currently not living there, but does pay the rent each month. The other tenant keeps her door locked when not there. The heat/air-conditioning unit is in the other tenant's bedroom. My daughter has to call the office when she wants the control moved. The office is open Mon-Friday 8-4:30. I am concerned that there is no one there to adjust the thermostat after 4:30, thus my daughter may be too hot or too cold on any given day. Both tenants pay equal, however my daughter is at the mercy of the office.

    The other tenant want sher door locked. I do not see the fairness in this arrangement.

    Realistically, she could just set have the thermostat to a reasonable temperature once (I'd say somewhere around 77, myself), and put clothes on/take them off if the weather changes. Did she know about this arrangement going into the lease? If she did, then I'd leave her alone to figure out how to handle it. If the thermostat is set at a reasonable temp, this is going to be annoying, but hardly life-threatening, and may help her learn how to be self-reliant and resourceful, which are both handy things to know.

    And yes, switching rooms might be an option.
