Open the case, find the hard drive, remove the power supply cable and the IDE or SATA cable, remove the screws that may be holding it, install in external HD adapter.

So, is this a desktop computer, or a laptop? For a desktop, follow the above steps. For a laptop, there is usually a screw on the bottom, near the outer edge, where it looks like a little plate can pull out. It could be more than once screw there, too. Take that screw out, and see if you can gentrly slide the drive out. If not, there may be screws closer to the center of the laptop too, holding it in. Look for any screws directly from the edge of the computer toward the middle that might be attached to the hard drive, and take them out. You should be able to get it out by just removing the screws from the bottom and sliding.

Note: Disconnect the power cord AND take the battery out before working on any laptop hardware.
