My daughter is 16, she has dark patches under her arms and on the back of her neck. I would swear it is from not bathing properly, and I have offered to give her a \\sugar or salt scrub, to help remove the dead skin, but she thinks that is crazy, her mom giving her a bath. I am embarressed for her, and want to help. She also has stretch marks on her thighs and back side. Please help me... :eek:

The dark patches on your daughter's skin are not caused from dirt or bathing improperly. It could be from a skin condition. African american skin is susceptible to the development skin disorders such as hyperpigmentation, keloids or acne. From your description, it sounds like lichenification (atopic dermatitis eczema). Lichenification is a skin condition resulting in thickening of the skin which can cause hyperpigmented patches with skin markings. This is caused by prolonged rubbing or scratching that accompanies eczema or dermatitis. If you're embarrassed and want to help your daughter, you should take her to see a dermatologist. He/she will examine her skin and make a proper diagnosis and then prescribe an ointment or cream to clear up her skin problem.

Stretch marks are caused when the skin is stretched to the point of breaking down that loses its' elasticity and collagen fibers. It's also caused by weight gain. Stretch marks are usually permanent, but there are treatments that can help soften the appearance of stretch marks. Products with vitamin A C & E, cocoa butter, and lanolin will help improve the appearance of stretch marks, but they will not remove them. The most clinical way to treat stretch marks is by surgery such as laser surgery or microdermabrasion.
