    Concerns about Tooth Extractions
    Hi,

My orthodontist recently informed me that I am going to need a good few tooth extractions in order for them to progress with my treatment.

This, for me, is a complete and utter nightmare. I have an intense fear of teeth falling out/being pulled out - and because of my impending situation, I have been losing sleep.

I'm 18 and living in England. Is there any reason why I cannot be fully anaesthetised?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Well first because there is no need to be put under, it is a very minor thing. I would ask why they are going to pull "good" teeth, you pull bad teeth, not good ones.

But they give you a couple shots, it kills the pain, you feel a little pressure, that is it,

It is not a big deal at all.

Sometimes there is not enough room to move teeth orthodontically without removing some adult teeth. The bicuspids are usually the first choice for removal however some orthodontists may remove the second molars (12 yr molars).

This is a very simple procedure with good local anaesthetic (freezing). Let your dentist know your fears. He may be able to use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax a little. You will still be aware of what's going on but it takes the "edge" off.

General anaesthetic is risky for everyone and should only be used when absolutely necessary.
