Oh god. I've messed by bf's hair up- he's not happy!
Hi, my boyfriend mentioned that hed like to dye his hair darker and asked if I would help. I said sure. His hair (was) dark blonde/light brown. I asked him what colour he wanted it and he said he wanted it the colour it was when it was wet- so light brown then. I got a box of dye (nice n'easy natural light brown) and we dyed it.

I couldn't stop laughing when we washed the dye off but my boyfriend was furious- the dye we bought- although it looks MUCH darker on the box- had dyed his hair a gingery blonde colour- it obviously wasn't dark enough.

So, after I calmed him down, lol, we bought nice and easy's cool brown- I figured the ash of the cool colour would tone it down?

Wrong. Because his hair was so gingery underneath- and possibly because of the tint of the dye too- it came out really dark- but with a red sheen to it!

He really was mad this time, so I left it. He went to hairdresser who played it down and said just dye over it again, it wasn't that bad.

Then I broached the subject of trying again with an ash colour to tone it down- this was about 14 days ago. It initially looked fine and we were happy, though the sun has made it fade and yes- you guessed it- the red sheen is back. My boyfriend is cool skin toned with blue eyes so it looks dreadful. He's very self conscious about it. Its fine in artificial light and daylight- but in strong sunslight- its ginger.

I've tried to point this out a few times, but he gets irritible and says "i'm not dyeing my hair again- i've had enough! its in enough mess! etc etc" but people are giving him those odd "have you dyed your hair" looks. And soon it will be growing out. This has probably put him off colouring his hair and I feel foolish too now. He needs to do something but he won't be hearing any of it. What should I do next? It needs to work! The hair dyes I used were for women- should I have used one for men? Like "just for men" I'm in the uk by the way. Thanks!

Well, you could tell him there are 60 year old women in salons everywhere who would kill for that hair color, but I doubt he'd be receptive.

Oh, I feel for you and him. I tried to dye my sister's hair once, and it turned out having a purple sheen to it.

It doesn't matter if at-home box colors have a female model on it, it's designed for both women and men. If you want to neutralize the red tones in your boyfriend's hair, you will need to use a green-base ash hair color. Go to the beauty supply store and ask a sales person to help you look for a green-base ash color in dark ash blonde. If they don't have it dark ash blonde, opt for a light ash brown color.
